GMU has been making money off animal cruelty for years, and it needs to stop!

Electric cattle prod the rodeo said they DON'T use.
The rodeo states they do not use electric prods,
but here's a photo taken by a student on campus the day of a PBR event in 2019.
Check closely what he is holding!

EagleBank Arena, part of George Mason University (GMU), has been making money off animal suffering for years. Ringling Brothers Circus, which finally went out of business after almost 150 years because of horrible animal abuse, used to be one of EagleBank Arena’s events. After the circus announced its last dates, the Arena’s GM stated, "We’re certainly disappointed."

So, what did GMU do? Instead of moving away from animal abusing acts, they decided to host bull riding/rodeo** events.

Only approximately 1% of GMU students and faculty attended the 2019 cruel bull riding event at EagleBank Arena. This event was all about making money. It isn't an event that most GMU students want to attend. EagleBank Arena should choose animal-free events that actually appeal to GMU students and faculty.

Additionally, EagleBank (the bank which paid millions of dollars to have their name associated with this stadium), needs to put out a public statement that communicates: "EagleBank does not support animal abuse and EagleBank does not want events that use animals as 'entertainment' taking place at EagleBank Arena."

Please complete the following two VERY QUICK actions, and share this page! THANK YOU.

ACTION 1:

Please call or email (or both!) the President of GMU, Dr. Gregory Washington, and let him know that GMU should do the right thing and stop hosting animal acts. These acts are outdated and cruel!

Sample of a quick email template, but to be most effective you are encouraged to use your own words and elaborate with a similar message:
Dr. Washington:
I am saddened that George Mason supports animal abuse by continuing to host bull riding events on campus. Please don't support bull riding. Please do the right thing and ban the use of animals as "entertainment" at GMU.

ACTION 2:

EagleBank paid millions of dollars to have GMU’s Arena re-named after their bank. It's sad that EagleBank chose to advertise with an arena that has a known history of supporting animal abuse! Please call and/or email the President of EagleBank and ask her why her bank is giving millions of dollars to have its name on an arena that hosts events where animals are abused — events the vast majority of GMU students oppose!

The President & CEO of EagleBank is Susan Riel.

Sample you can use but, again, please personalize to be more effective:
Dear Ms. Riel:
I am writing because I am saddened that EagleBank Arena continues to use animals as "entertainment" to make money - for example, by allowing PBR on campus and other events in which animals are exploited and harmed.
Please stand up against animal abuse by issuing a public statement that EagleBank does not want events that use animals as "entertainment" at the Arena that bears their name. Until you do the right thing and speak up, EagleBank shares the blame and responsibility for all animal abuse that takes place at EagleBank Arena.

**Here are several links explaining WHY events such as bull riding and rodeos are harmful to animals:

Bull riding is inherently cruel.

  1. George Mason University should be promoting compassion and kindness not dominance and cruelty to animals. As a student at GMU, I am very disappointed to see them continue hosting cruel industries like Ringling Bros and PBR here despite the protests by locals and students. This is wrong, Mason- SHUT IT DOWN.
